My New Media class currently has a wiki page and I’ve mostly been correcting errors and adding information when needed in the New Media in Entertainment page. There was a section on this page called “Downside to Facebook which only had links to article and I just wrote some sentences that summarize the article posted on this section. I am sure to add more information as I research more articles.
The next new thing should be being able to have your cell phone or email address linked to a credit or debit card and using it for purchase. Instead of giving a debit or credit card for purchase, using a cell phone or an email address and password might have that added security. Something like Paypal but instead of doing it online, its being done in person. I have heard that China is already doing it for vending machines but I don’t know the specifics on this phenomenon since I didn’t find anything online but I think that might be the next big thing in new media.
I had to create a presentation about Old Media versus New Media for my Principles of New Media class. Old Media is the forms of communicating prior to the digital world, which include analog radio and TV and printed materials such as books and magazines. It is a reliable, reputable but outdated source of information. Its information structure passes from one medium to another with no option for the recipient for the information to give their input.
New Media is a form of communication used after the introduction of the internet. It’s interactive and the fastest way to publish the most up to date information. Many would suggest that information from new media is considered less accurate because it may not have been authenticated the way reporting has traditionally been verified by editors at newspapers and television networks. Besides Old media has been new media one point in time.
I also spoke about how important new media is to society. The surprising answer I found through research of scholarly article is…not really. In one article I’ve found even though during the 2006 elections, an estimated $40 million was spent on advertising over the Web, up 38 percent from the $29 million spent in the 2004 elections but only accounted for 1 percent of total political advertising dollars spent on all media platforms in 2006. Secondly, while the percentage of those who identify the Internet as their primary news source has grown to 26 percent, the majority of the American public is still getting their news on the television. According to a July 2007, Pew Research Center for the People & the Press survey, two-thirds of Americans say they prefer television. Again, blogs and other forms of citizen media are just one component of online news, where the biggest audience numbers are generated largely by sites owned and operated by the richest media companies, such as Time Warner’s CNN.com, Yahoo News, AOL News, and Gannett’s USA Today.com. Reports on these sites is overwhelmingly traditional in nature, suggesting most Americans, when they go online, are still consuming news that adheres to time-honored principles of fairness and accuracy. I concluded that unless traditional media use new media to their advantage, then there is no way that they can survive in this world.
New media is something that is now very valuable in today’s society. Why? One Word. Marketing. Blogs and social networks all mention something about the individual’s personalities and the personality of their friends. That’s where the issue of privacy and confidentiality comes in. The huge companies are buying out new media sites (for example, YouTube owned by Google and MySpace owned by NewsCorp) for only one reason – information about potential targets. It’s not like these sites generate actual revenue other than the advertisement offered on the website. There is a huge chance these companies use the blogging and social networking sites to find out a person’s likes, dislikes, and the common link between an individual and their friends and use it to market their products and services. I think there is an issue of privacy and confidentiality when it comes to new media because I have blogs and social networking profiles to keep in contact with friends and family, not for information companies use to make a buck.
New Media would create a great atmosphere to help Baruch prospective or current students with any questions or concerns about the college. I think wikis would be a great asset to Baruch College because it gives students accessible information on the school, classes, handbooks and other important information. The advisement center already have a facebook profile but I think if other departments follow suit, they will see alot less students visiting to ask questions since all the answers would be online.
New Media technologies contains computers, laptops, mobile phones, particularly smartphones, or any gadget that can access the internet. Without the internet, new media would not exist. Blogs, wikis, social networking are all considered new media and need the internet to thrive.
The recession is affecting the media industry. Companies are spending less on advertising, which is less money for old media such as television and radio commercials, newspaper and magazine ads, which in turn old media have less money for shows on television and radio and for writers in magazines and newspapers. Also the emergence of new media also had a negative effect on old media. Information is known instantaneously and communication was two-way. According to the article “Who Needs a TV? I’m Watching on a Laptop” by Laura Holson, online television gives us the opportunity to watch our favorite shows whenever we want and with limited commercials. Old Media had to moved their shows online due to the popularity of the internet. The only way old media can still survive is if they conform to new media.
Virtual worlds can be used like social networking; to keep in contact with friends and family. There are different kinds of social virtual worlds such as forums, blogs, wikis and chatrooms. These are communities which have their own world or their own rules. Virtual worlds are also used in the medical field, to help hospitalized people to act beyond their illness and bond with people who might be in the same position. Virtual worlds is especially used in the business world; buying and selling products online and advertising to within virtual worlds.
Virtual worlds is another way for people to communicate whether it’s personally or professionally. One positive aspect of virtual world is it brings people together. Someone who is usually shy and quiet in real life can use virtual worlds to still be exposed to other individuals but can feel a bit easier about meeting new people. I watched a show called “True Life” on MTV not too long ago and there was a girl who’s a talented singer and guitarist but was afraid to perform in public so she opted to perform in second life instead. Second Life as well as other people who participated in this virtual world gave her the confidence to perform at a coffee house by the end of the episode. This is how I believe it fosters creativity. Someone who is creative but not as outgoing can showcase their skills in virtual world and can develop the confidence to do it in the real world. The negative aspect of virtual world is more or less the same as all other New Media – predators. There will still be malice people who will use new media for assault, identity theft and other online crimes.
I think virtual world is something that will continue to foster in the workplace and in hospitals. Virtual worlds just makes communicating internationally easier.
Social Networking is becoming increasingly popular in this technology-crazed world. Social Networking was first used personally - to keep in touch with friends and family. The corporate world is now viewing social networking as a simpler way to communicate with other employees in the same company. It can also be used to information. It is also a very useful for networking; potiential candiates can be recruited and employers can be sought after.
I have used facebook, myspace, twitter, and a number of other sites. Although I have cancelled the majority, one thing remains certain – it keeps people together. Friends and family all over the world can keep in touch, something that was once difficult to do. There are also applications that can help pass the time, which in turn you can make new online friends. I think there is a great marketing aspect to social networking because it has such a huge following. Companies can definitely use that to their advantage.
According to the article, “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting” by Frank Langfitt, employers have definitely used social networking to find a right fit employee. I know several people who have been offered a job when employers saw their profiles. Even Barack Obama used the power of social networking to win the presidency.
I don’t believe there is a “dark side” to social networking if it’s used correctly. For example when it is used to harass and verbally abuse someone, then that can have consequences for the actions. Other than that, I think social networking is a good thing, personally and professionally.
A blog is a website that is generally similar an online journal. It’s a flow of thoughts that is shared online by an individual. The individual makes a post on a blog based on opinions, feelings or any other source the individual chooses. It is usually organized in reverse chronological order. A typical blog would combine images, text, links, and other media related to its topic. The readers’ ability to post their comments in response to the blog serves as an important part of many blogs. Blogs usually do not have a specific purpose or reason for its creation. It is still considered that individual’s blog even though other users may comment and reply on the blog.
Wikis are also websites, but are more community-based . Most wikis serve a specific purpose. Wikis are more like a platform, it is controlled mostly by the general public . It is information with other users are contributing, modifying, and editing information on the wikis. Any information of the topic that does not meet this specific purpose is promptly removed by the user community. According to the article, Wikipedia will Limit Changes on Article on Living People” by Noam Cohen, Wikipedia will release a new feature, called flagged revisions. Flagged revisions will require that an experienced volunteer editor for Wikipedia will sign off on any change made by the public before it can go live. It will sit invisibly on Wikipedia’s servers, and visitors will be directed to the earlier version until the change is approved.
Convergence is very important in today’s world. As more technologies become more evident, it is changing the way we think, work, and communicate. Convergence is not just about technology, it’s about changing a society – the way people live, work, play is more technologically advanced because of convergence
Old Media are more traditional ways of communicating or processing information. Old media refers to books, televisions, radios, newspapers and any other medium that existed before the internet. It is the way information is communicated to us, there is no comments, replies or opinions for the information recieved. New Media includes blogs, social networking sites, and wikis. It’s a way for people to interact each other and exchange information. Old media is usually restricted and censored, where new media is also more social, uncensored, people choose what they want to discuss, and there is usually a option where other users can comment and reply to the information.
